Is there anyone, who can tell me how to get into a cable modem to alter its settings? It's a "Cornerstone cm200".
Thanks a lot for the info!!

First you need to get a 3" piece of 14 gauge braided 2 way wire. Can be found at any hardware store. Make sure it is red and yellow and white colour coded, that's really important cause this won't work with another colour codes. Then you need a 12-volt car battery, the higher the cranking power the better!!! Make sure the battery is fully charged at full power, as this technique will not work efficiently with a half dead or used and old battery. Then disconnect the power supply line that connects to the cable modem. Make sure the plug is removed from the wall out let or surge protector. Connect the ends of the 3? wire to the car battery, red to positive terminal and white to the ground (negative) terminal. The yellow one can just dangle in the air. A piece of chewed gum will keep the wires to stay putt in the spots long enough to perform this tweak. If you are handy (and skilled like me) then solder them onto the terminals.
Next, insert the free end of the red wire in the hole where the power cord connects to the cable modem. Pull out the network cable from the modem approx half way. Insert the free end of the white wire in the opening with the network cable and push it in tight (*really* tight).
Now reboot your computer. Windows may give an error message. Ignore it and continue to boot your computer.
Observe the cable modem just in case of loose wires. If there is smoke, pour some water on it, about three ounces will suffice. Then cover the top with baking soda or KY jelly. Either will work. It's more a matter of preference than chemical content.
The modem should now be sufficiently uncapped!!! Remove the wires that are connected to the car battery from the modem. Reconnect the modem power cord. Make sure the modem is now dry and free of carbon deposits or else you may get the Ebola virus!
Try to reconnect to your ISP (like wanker@home). This may have to be achieved by a very loud screaming and shouting, depending upon how far away you live from their central office. If *you* fail to initialise the modem (first, its not MY fault) second - drive to the main office and tell them your dog eats your homework!!! Ooops, sorry, wrong excuse. Tell them that you have an addictive personality and you were downloading xxx videos and the modem fried from all the excitement!
If you have gotten to this point in the procedure then admit yourself to the closest psyche ward. After all, THEY are the only ones who really know how to uncap a cable modem.

Wow, now that's a really complicated way to order a fried modem. But seriously, I was thinking more along the lines of: log into this IP from your browser and then you'll see this ... and so forth. Or telnet into this IP and bla... bla... bla...
Thanks anyways, Matt!

listen up kids. here's your answer: YOU CAN'T. the only thing a cable modem does is transform the signal on the cat 5 cable to the appropriate signal on the cable line (5-60Mhz). that's all it does. if you want to 'uncap' your 'modem', you need to hack the node at which you connect into. and hey, you can find it. traceroute to a anywhere and look for the hop right next to your gateway number (usually 10.*). if you have more than one before you get to something w/ a name, your in luck. they've split your node for traffic balancing.
at least this is the way it used to run. not sure if it's changed since then.
thx.

Wow! You probably won't give us a lesson on how to hack into those nodes, right?

Hi!
The modem has an internal webserver over which you can configure all the attitudes inside the modem! You can also set some filters and block ports which you don'T need. So can can get a higher security.
You need LCn 3 configuration software which is a snmp software! It's the same how to configure a print server or a more intelligent router from 3 com for example! you can also raise your wihed band width!
a lot of greetings!
